Let's SING to LEARN!

If you have been to any of my executive function workshops, you know I love to sing songs with students to teach them about their self-regulation, attention, memory, planning, and cognitive flexibility. Moving and singing in time with peers provides a valuable opportunity to practice beat competency, self-regulation, and focused attention.

Music naturally engages multiple attention and memory systems simultaneously. When cognitive skill lessons are embedded in songs, children encode information through melody, rhythm, and lyrics together, creating stronger neural pathways than verbal instruction alone. The repetitive structure of songs allows for practice without feeling tedious, and children can mentally "replay" the song later to recall the skill or strategy they learned. One of my favorite things to do is take the chorus of our executive function songs and turn them into classroom chants to support transitions or prepare students for a lesson.
