Five Fast Back To School Tips
Posted On: August 12th, 2010

We’re all making the transition from summer fun to Back To School. You may be purchasing school supplies, getting back into routines and thinking, “How’s this all gonna work?”

Well, we have some mom-generated tips to help you make a smooth transition.

1.   Get up and go! We know you are busy, but attending Back To School Night or the classroom tours offered at your school provides your child an opportunity to see the school (even if you’ve been there before) check out the new classroom and meet the teacher with you on board.
2.    Prepare. Readying backpacks, school clothes and study areas ahead of the first day of school will help your child feel calm and organized. Research shows that children who organize with the help of their parents daily do better academically and socially in school. A ready child is a successful child. (If your child is chronically disorganized check out Organizing the Disorganized Child.)
3.    Talk, explore, review and practice. Before school starts you may want to talk to your child about what he or she should expect.  Talk with them about their activities, schedule, friends, and teacher. Previewing what school will be like reduces anxiety for many children.
4.    Get together with other moms/dads whose children will start school with yours. This will help your child to feel connected with other kids as they rev up their playground skills, move through the social nuances of relationships and buddy-up with new and old friends.
5.    Establish and stick to a school routine. Every night before school, get your child’s clothes ready and prepare his or her lunchbox for the following day.  Have your child write out and participate in back to school routines. Routines will help your child feel calm and organized as he heads out the door in the morning. If lists help you (they sure help me) Check out one of my fav sites: List Plan It.
